When we were looking at low maintenance, no doorman East Village apartments this weekend, a thought suddenly occured to me - where are the trash chutes??? It turns out that we have been relentlessly spoiled by our full-service luxury downtown rental into believing that disposing of garbage involves opening your door and walking down the hall in uggs and sweat pants. Little did we know that in many, many buildings, taking the trash out involves hauling bags of garbage into an elevator and going down to a creepy basement all by ourselves.
My sister, who lives in such a building, says that she "mitigates" the situation by "making frequent trips with smaller bags" which is made easier if the "elevator that goes all the way to the basement" is the one that happens to show up when she presses the down button.
